ATM Overview
This section introduces the basic concepts behind ATM and their
historical development.
Standardisation
An overview of the seven layer OSI model and how ATM relates to the
Layer 2. The section includes the structure of the ATM Forum and the
ITU standards bodies who developed the technology along with key
specifications. The ATM reference model is introduced.
ATM Physical Layer
This section focuses on the Transmission Convergence Sub-Layer and
the Physical Media Dependent Sub-Layer, the two specific parts of
the Layer 1 protocol needed when using ATM. The use of SDH as the
transmission technology used by ATM is discussed.
ATM Layer
This section concentrates on the lower layer of the ATM protocol.
The different ATM interfaces, ATM Cell Types and the functions of
the 5 byte header are explained.
ATM Adaptation
This section concentrates on the higher layer of the ATM protocol.
The ATM Forum Adaptation types are introduced. The Segmentation and
Reassembly functions of each AAL are explained and applications
given.
Traffic Management
The different Traffic Descriptors are explained and the policing
capabilities, including the Connection Admission Control and the
Generic Cell Rate algorithms, are discussed. Other Traffic
Management applications are detailed such as Queueing, Traffic
Shaping and Congestion Indications.
ILMI
The Interim Local Management Interface is discussed giving detail on
its protocol stack and functions including connectivity monitoring.
Signalling Q.2931
A review of the Signalling protocol used with Switched Virtual
Connections in ATM. An outline of the message structure and types
and details regarding the Information Elements and their structures.
PNNI
This section discusses the Private Network to Network Interface. It
introduces the routing, hierarchy, addressing and signalling aspects
of this ATM interface.
